It's that time of year again, the time when the sale of roses, diamonds, and chocolate surge. Its the time that people scramble to find a date for February 14th, even if no emotion lies behind it just to prevent them from being alone on the holiday of love.I’ve found that this holiday usually promotes two types of emotion, one of sappy fond memories and one of bitterness and resentment.Sure, it’s a “hallmark holiday” but it encourages some to tell others how they feel about them, whether it be for the first time or just sealing an emotion which could have grown a bit tired within a relationship. If there weren’t something to this holiday would Victoria’s Secret or Kay Jewelers have this many commercials plaguing our television sets?I think not.
So, in response to this holiday those that are alone are left wondering what they want in the area of love and those with someone are renewing their feelings for that “special someone.”Where do you fall in this equation? Are you a hater who turns up their nose to this pink and red flavored holiday? Are you one half of a loving relationship pondering what to get him or her?Okay, all that aside, what does this holiday actually prompt within your heart?Do you buy gifts because you want to or because you’re supposed to?Do you hate the holiday because secretly you wish you had someone to get something for?
I won't even lie, I fall into the latter half of those questions.I have long turned up my nose to the holiday scoffing at the frenzy of paper valentines and chocolate. The smiling couples, the hand holding, the public displays of attention have prompted responses from me such as, “Get a room.”“Okay, everyone knows you’re together, get over it,” and the like.I give my friends dirty looks while they scrutinize over that perfect gift.I volunteer to work all day and all night on February
You have given chocolates before, just never like this!
February 14th so I can say that I am too busy to go out and do something. The crazy part is, I’m not alone. Many people do this very thing and act like they want nothing to do with the holiday.
This year however, I am forced to work a double on this holiday and secretly I cringe as a result.Although I didn’t have any “set in stone” plans, a couple have been brought to the table and ANYTHING seems like a welcome distraction as opposed to working at a movie theater and seeing all the disgusting couples with love in their eyes hand in hand coming to see a romantic comedy or something like that.My best friend and I were in talks to go out to dinner (because her boyfriend will be at work) and this would be a welcome distraction to us both but instead I will be cooped up in a cinderblock prison forcing a smile while these couples buy a popcorn and pop to share.Just thinking about it makes me cringe.

Sure, I could probably go out after work and bring along some poor sap to make some forced romantically led conversation to fulfill both of our Valentine’s thoughts but wouldn’t that be making a mockery of the very thing that this holiday is supposed to praise, the emotion of love itself?Or, I’m sure I could go to some bar with some of my single friends and drink myself into oblivion talking about all of things that couldn’t be farther away from the topic of love. Then however, I definitely see myself as a bitter hater when I realistically want nothing more than to be half of a happy couple drinking wine and talking about when they first met.I know, could I be more of a cliché?
The purpose of this article is not to call anyone out or accuse anyone of these same feelings or to hate on the very thing that is love.It is to broadcast how I feel and to blatantly tell you of my disgruntlement against the very holiday that reminds me once again that I am alone yet another year on this very day.Sure, I have had relationships during other points of the year, but to be completely honest, I have always been in ones that seem to end about a month before this very holiday.Or, I have found that when I am in a relationship on this day, the guy always forgets or it is such an infant relationship that any sort of gift maybe other than a drink or dinner seems forced and seems like you’re going too fast.So basically if you are in one of these fabulous lovey relationships on this holiday, more power to you.I hope you have the best one yet!!If you aren’t in a relationship and this holiday is nothing more than a brutal reminder of your singlehood, then why not do a shot at the bar when you are celebrating your single misery for all the other people who are doing the same thing??
